What this site is
buyvpn.org is a field guide to virtual private networks written for people who want to understand the thing they are switching on. Not a shop. Not a ranking. Not a chart of five providers where the one paying the most is inexplicably in first place.
There are no affiliate links here, which is worth stating plainly because it explains everything else about the site. Nobody is paid when you click. That removes the incentive to describe a VPN as more powerful than it is, and it is the reason a good half of what follows consists of telling you what the tunnel cannot do.
A VPN in one sentence
A VPN wraps your internet traffic in an encrypted tunnel to a server somewhere else, so the networks between you and that server can see the tunnel but not what is inside it, and the sites you visit see the server's address rather than yours.
Everything else is detail. Useful detail — the difference between a tunnel that leaks and one that does not is entirely detail — but that sentence is the shape of it.
Three things it does
- It closes the local network. Café wifi, hotel wifi, the conference network, the airport: whoever runs it, and whoever else is on it, sees one encrypted flow to one address and nothing more. This is the oldest and least arguable use.
- It takes the itinerary away from your ISP. Your provider still knows you are connected and how much data moved. It stops knowing which sites, which in several countries is a commercially valuable list and in others a legally retained one.
- It changes where you appear to be. Which matters for region-locked services, for prices that vary by country, and for anyone who would rather a website not know which city they are sitting in.
Three things it does not
- It does not make you anonymous. You are still logged into your accounts, still carrying the same browser fingerprint, still behaving recognisably like yourself. The address changed; the person did not. This is the single most oversold claim in the category and it gets its own article.
- It does not remove the observer, it relocates them. Your ISP stops watching and your VPN provider starts. That is a trade, and whether it is a good one depends entirely on which of the two you would rather trust with the same list.
- It does not protect you from what you do. Malware, phishing, a bad password, an app that ships your contacts to three continents — the tunnel carries all of it faithfully and encrypted.
The vocabulary you will meet
Providers have a house style and it is aggressive. A short translation:
- “Military-grade encryption.” AES-256, which is what your bank, your phone and every HTTPS site already use. It is table stakes. A provider advertising it is advertising that they have a lock on the door.
- “No-logs policy.” Meaningful only with an independent audit, a date, and a jurisdiction. Without those it is a sentence on a website.
- “Unlimited bandwidth.” No monthly cap. Says nothing about speed at nine in the evening, which is a different problem entirely.
- “5000+ servers.” A count of virtual machines. Twenty well-provisioned servers near you beat five thousand distributed across places you will never select.
